Parish Council agrees Precept for 2012
Parish Council agrees Precept for 2012

At its December meeting Exton Parish council agreed the Precept for the village for 2012. The Precept is the component of the Council Tax which funds the Parish council's budget for the year. Councillors agreed a modest increase to the Precept to allow for rising costs in some areas and also in order to start funding replacement of the village's ageing street lights.

The Precept for 2012 will be £6,700 which would mean a village council tax on a grade D property of £26.29.

Referendum on the voting system

Confused about the alternative voting system?

On 5 May Exton voters will not only have the chance to vote for a new Parish Council but also in the referendum on the voting system for UK Parliamentary elections.

The question on the voting paper will be as follows:

At present the UK uses the 'first past the post' system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the 'alternative vote' system be used instead?

In the alternative vote system voters are asked to number the candidates in order of preference rather than putting a cross against their first choice candidate. A candidate is only elected if supported by at least 50% of those who voted. If no candidate achieves 50% support in the first count, the votes of the least popular candidate are transferrd to the candidates they ranked as second choice. If this results in a candidate achieving 50% of the votes they are elected, otherwise the next least popular candidates votes are transferred in the same way. This can continue through as many rounds as necessary to produce a winning candidate. More »

Still confused then click here to see the BBC website's explanation of the AV referendum and how the two voting systems compare.

Any elector requiring a postal vote or a proxy vote in this election should contact the Election Registation Officer at Rutland County Council, Catmose, Oakham, LE15 6HP. » Less
